Painting with Pigmented Plaster

2021-2023

The Pandemic kept me in Puglia, Italia. The intensity of the disease-ridden time carried over into the studio where I plunged deeply into working with pigmented lime plaster, sourced nearby. My paintings involved nothing more or less than the pigmented material applied to poplar. I was determined to survive Covid and just as determined to push my exploration into color.

When it was finally possible to do so, Patricia and I left Puglia for our home in the Pacific Northwest. I spent the time in my Fall City studio preparing for an exhibition of the work I’d brought from Puglia.

In autumn 2022 we returned to Puglia, and I reentered the studio. I wanted to loosen my application of the lime plaster to include more gesture and organic form, though I remained just as intrigued with surface texture and richness. I knew continued application of multiple thin coats of plaster would naturally take me into new territory.
